Messages I have seen on Instagram this week... I am attractive
I am loved
I am rich
I am fit
I am slim
I am successful
Check out my amazing (insert whatever object makes you feel as if you measure up)
And yet you do measure up. You don’t need a small staged square to make you more than. But because the square next door shows their success you start to display your success and now we’re stuck in a constant feed of bullshit brag that has no real foundation to prop it up.
I know people with image insecurities who talk about their beauty, those posting couple selfies who are on the rocks in their relationship and others who aren’t making any money in their business but display a filtered view of their latest win and oh-so-busyness. This isn’t real success. It’s square-cess - living to impress on Instagram. Don’t get me wrong, Instagram has its place and it can be a great community, it certainly has been for me meeting other creatives.
But I often think ‘who are you posting this for?’ This thinly veiled sense of self, the hint to show others your wealth, your worth. And why don’t you feel good enough? Because maybe you would if you took your eyes off the screen for a second and tapped into your soul instead. @calexanderphoto
