I've had a falling out with IG for the last month. I just felt disconnected from everything on my feed, and usually this is when I would just quit an app. But then I came to this epiphany, dun, dun, dun! I have control of what's on my feed, and I don't mean only unfollowing people or hiding their posts (although some of that had to happen), but IGs algorithm allows me to control what I see. In moving to an algorithm it prevented the still-butt-hurt people that posted 15 times a day from clogging my feed and allowed me to tell decide what I want to see.
In the past, as I went through my feed I would like almost everyone's post. I mean it's like smiling, right? It doesn't cost me anything to do it, but it might make the other person's day a little better. The problem with that is, I was giving totally wrong inputs to the algorithm, so my feed was getting skewed in certain directions that I wasn't totally engaged with. So now I think about, is this really a post I like? Would I want to see other posts with these hash tags or from this person? No, maybe not then. Yes, like it! Do I really like it? Then maybe I should leave a comment.
I know it all sounds like common sense (or maybe that's my AI attuned brain talking) but just something to think about. All the news articles talk about how to get your post seen with the algorithms, but they never focus on the majority of users of how to take back your feed
